Many jumped on the recycling bandwagon. However, the excitement soon wore off the recycling momentum slowed way down.

Because of the extra effort that was required in order for households to recycle, many simply chose not to. Besides having to take the time to separate trash into different bins, people would also have to remember yet another day to take the cans to the curb besides their regularly scheduled trash day. So, many felt it was not worth the effort. Not to mention, in some places it costs more to recycle.

Recycling has been pushed on the public for the last decade. From the media with celebrity commercials making you feel guilty, all the way down to the school drives where kids were encouraged to take care of the planet by recycling. Some parents were even angered because their children were made to feel that they were bad people because they did not recycle.

Now, don’t get me wrong, recycling is definitely a good thing. Finding ways to reuse garbage is a wonderful idea. But, recycling in and of itself is not going to save our planet. What will help is that people start caring and teach their children to care. Once people really start caring they’ll do their part without the media or school teachers guilting them.

The bottom line is, if you recycle, great! More power to you! You are doing a wonderful thing. Your plastic, glass and paper will go somewhere and hopefully be used again, don’t look down on the guy who doesn’t put his bins out at the curb. Respect his choice not to just as he respects yours. When the respect starts going around, you’ll find it has a bigger effect on this planet than recycling ever could have.

It stinks and it’s messy - that’s how we see our garbage. But, did you ever stop to consider that there’s more to waste disposal than just taking out the trash? When it comes to waste management, safety is always the top concern.

Proper Waste Disposal Starts With You

You have no one else to blame but yourself if you turn your back on your responsibilities when it comes to waste disposal. For every home, it is important to have a well maintained and properly filled container. This assures you that you’re keeping yourself and your family out of harms way.

It pays to know the best practices to waste disposal in order to make sure that you’re doing it right for your family’s sake. Your loading container should be able to fully close after loading your garbage. This would get rid of rodents and flies from feasting on your garbage thus posing health threats not only to your family but your neighborhood as well. Making sure that your garbage bags are tightly tied up before placing them on your container would also lessen or reduce the build up of bacteria.
You should make sure that your garbage container is always kept clean at all times. By making sure bags are sealed will prevent leaky materials from running down into the container. Also, you need to avoid throwing loose trash into the container, especially items that contain liquids. This makes waste disposal less messy for all involved.

Proper Waste Disposal Prevents Injury

Make sure sharp items such as broken glass or can lids are wrapped so that they will not pose a threat of injury to you or someone else. Label your containers properly so that all the members of your household are aware of the rules when throwing away their garbage. It is highly recommended to train your kids on proper waste management so that they can eventually take on the habit as they get older. With this practice, you’re not only helping on our current problem with waste disposal, you’re also training your children to become responsible and conscious of their environment.

There are some items that need special handling when disposing of like appliances, batteries, construction debris, flammable items, liquids, tires, etc. You may not need them anymore but you’d be surprised to know that you can dispose of these items and still get some kind of incentive by disposing them properly. There are depots set up by local governments that give you incentives for bringing in such items to them. The price may be very small but it beats just throwing them away.

Lastly, you should be aware of the rules and guidelines that your community has set forward when it comes to handling your trash. Being in the loop would help you avoid fines and penalties that goes along with improper disposal.

Proper trash handling is very important to learn. Making it a habit would definitely yeild great results for our future generation. By practicing these simple techniques, not only are you proving to be a responsible citizen in your community, you’re also posing as a guide that other people should follow helping to make the world a better place to live in.

With the way people throw garbage out of their homes, it would seem that there’s an endless supply of new resources that man has at his disposal. Everything we use and consume on a daily basis definitely comes from something natural. Do you really think we have a never ending fountain of resources at our fingertips?

Look around you. Have you ever stopped to wonder why the world seems to be so stricken with calamities? This is all caused by our own doing. We are continuing to enjoy all the luxuries in life without even considering looking back and seeing if our source is taking it well. All the flooding that affects countries world wide is caused by continuous deforestation. And where do these trees go? Look at what you’re sitting on or perhaps the toothpick you’re using. What do you use to light up your fireplace? Ever imagined where the paper you’re writing on came from? These are not man-made resources. All of them were given to us by Mother Nature. Cutting trees may take just a few hours or even less but growing one takes years. While it is okay that we use them for our own advantage, it would be wise to give a little back to Mother Nature so that future generations would get to enjoy the same amenities we’re enjoying now.

Not All Trash Is Junk

Not all trash that we throw out to the garbage is really junk. We only call it trash because we don’t have any use for them anymore. You’d be surprised at what that junk could be turned into. Paper and all other fibrous products can be recycled to make new boxes, special paper products, wrappers and other things. The empty bottles that we throw away can be used to store other items. Drinking straws can be turned into bags and other decorative materials.

Someone Might Can Use Your Trash

Why burn your trash if someone else can make something out of it. Not only is burning considered illegal in some places, but you’re also adding to the air pollution problem that we’re trying to help resolve. A lot of other people could benefit from the old, run-down clothes you have. Again, it may all seem to be junk to you but if it can be used by someone else or remade into something else, then we should think twice before we just simply dispose of it.

Patronize the use of recyclable things instead of just buying out of whim. Not only are you helping a good cause, you’re also starting a habit that can very well prove to be your generation’s life saver.

Each day, tons and tons of waste are being dumped on to Mother Earth in various ways. If no proper waste management procedure is implemented, there would surely come a time where we would be standing on the very junk that we are now throwing away.

Understanding waste management procedures is something that should be inherent to every individual on the face of the earth. We all share the same air we breath and water we drink. Given this reality, it’s only right that we all give our fair share to keep the world we live in clean and safe for all of us and for the generations to come.

Different Types of Waste

Waste comes in different forms and may as well be categorized to different levels. We have regular waste or non-hazardous waste which comprises waste materials that does not pose harm to living things. This may often be the common junk that we throw away from our homes. There is also what we call Controlled Waste, a term we use to call healthcare waste. While these are not life threatening, they may have contaminants that can cause spread of disease or other health issues. Hazardous Waste speaks for itself. We normally hear this term whenever people are referring to wastes that poses threat or may perhaps risk lives of people and damage environment.

Helping With Waste Management

One might wonder how he or she as an individual can help the macro level of waste disposal considering the fact that he or she is only one person. Everything starts from something small before it turns out and grows into something big. We must also keep in mind that just because our household waste products are generally classified as non hazardous, it doesn’t mean that we don’t help add to hazardous waste that gets dumped everyday.

Take for example the batteries, broken down television sets, and computer monitors that we throw away as part of our junk. These things have mercury that when disposed of improperly can cause damage to our soil and would have it’s toll on our water supply. On your part, it may seem like you’re just throwing away one item. But thinking on a larger scale, how many people are doing the same thing all across the globe?

Governments are providing proper places where you can dispose of these kinds of waste products. It may take a little effort in order to takeyour junk there, but knowing that you’ve taken a step to helping keep your environment safe is a good and lasting thing.

Segregation can also be done with your home trash in order to help organize waste management even more. Try putting up different trash cans with labels as to the kind of trash that should be thrown into them. Not all plastics are biodegradable. Separating them and classifying them into their proper categories would surely help on waste disposal.

The world is such as small place compared to the piles of garbage that we throw at it everyday. While you may feel the efforts your putting in as you practice proper waste management are small and insignificant, you’d be surprised to realize that that small step your taking is a huge leap towards making our world a better place to live in.

It is 6 AM and while you are still sound asleep in bed, the men and women who work for the trash hauling companies have already been on the road close to an hour going from house to house emptying garbage cans and making their rounds to remove your trash.

Other than when we pay the monthly fee to have our garbage picked up almost right on our doorstep, most of us don’t give much thought to the trash companies and the services they provide. Perhaps, we should.

These companies and their employees provide a very necessary service for each individual family and for our communities as well.

They not only provide bi-weekly and weekly pick up of our garbage thus helping to keep our homes and yards rodent and disease free, but these people sometimes work ten and twelve hour days in order to meet the needs of their customers.

Besides picking up the ordinary day to day trash, these companies provide a host of other services as well.

They furnish businesses and individuals with trash dumpsters and recycle bins and then pick up the trash and the recyclable goods and take care of them for us.

Many companies also will for a small extra fee pick up and recycle or dispose of your old furniture, electronics, compost and other items for you, saving you the time and effort of doing these things for yourself.

In some areas they haul away brush and even leaves. In others they take care of demolition waste from rebuilding projects or your self roofing job.

There are trash companies that take care of slaughter house waste. Others trash companies take care of industrial waste. Their businesses is trash and they are so good at their business that you don’t even notice how efficiently they do their jobs.

Imagine what your life would be without them. With landfill sites now at premium, gone are the old days when families would load their garbage in the back of the truck or the car trunk and take it to the local dump.

If you had to drive to a landfill today you would be required to drive as much as 100 miles or more just to find a landfill.

Instead of taking a minute or two to set a trash can out by the road, you would, by necessity have to spend the better part of the day taking care of your trash. More than likely you could not afford to take that much time once or twice a week so your garbage would build up and attract rodents, and create a germ filled environment in your own house or yard.

Not to mention that you would have no way too haul those items to big to fit in your vehicle. Keeping your home neat and tidy would be difficult if not impossible.

Thankfully, you don’t have to worry about such things. The men and women who work for the trash companies do all your worrying and hauling for you. Their job may be considered a trashy business but they are dedicated professionals and they and the trash company they work for are dedicated to giving you great service.

With all the trash accumulated each day it was bound to happen. Some person, somewhere was bound to find a way to turn some of that trash into treasure. Actually, with everyone going green these days, there are some wonderful treasures out there that started as someone’s trash. Everyone is getting into the act from individuals to large corporations, to entire city planners.

Individual Treasures

People who enjoy doing craft projects learned a long time ago, that using trash was a simple and cheap way to create wonderful gifts and decorations for the home. From quilts and braided rugs made from scraps of old clothing to lamps made from large glass jars and buttons individuals have used their imagination to create wonderful crafts from every day trash.

It is no longer unusual to see beautiful and funny Christmas ornaments made from burned out light bulbs, or coasters made from CDs. Anyone who enjoys crafts can find a way to recycle trash to make interesting and eye catching decorations.

Recycled Material Used for Playground Equipment and Playground Safety Measures

Recycled plastic milk containers and other plastics are being used in the manufacturing of playground equipment. These sturdy equipment sets are used in schools and residential playgrounds across the county.

In Bloomfield NW a pile of recycled tires have been dyed a deep blue and forms the base of an entire children’s playground to help prevent serious injuries should a child slide down the slide too fast or take a tumble.

Trash for Energy

For years animal waste has been used as fertilizer on farms and in gardens and now it is being turned into sources of fuel.

The latest fuel source from trash though comes from the landfills themselves. When landfill waste decomposes it releases a gas known as methane that is poisonous. Companies have now found a way to purify this gas into a fuel know as LFG (landfill gas). In California LFG is being used to fuel 300 garbage trucks as they go about their daily business of collecting garbage.

Trashy Art

Artists are now making use of trash to make beautiful sculptures. In Tuckaho State Park there is a lovely serpent sculpture made entirely out of recycles tires. Other sculptures include a gleaming silver bull made entirely out of car parts, a centipede made from bunt cake pans, and a giant skull made from various kitchen utensils.

These sculptures are not only turning trash into treasures but giving cities some great public art in the process.

Mount Trashmore

Perhaps one of the finest examples of how imagination can turn trash into treasure is a park in Virginia Beach, Virginia known as Mount Trashmore. This entire park is made from a landfill. Where once piles of garbage marred the landscape there is a 165 acre park where families come to enjoy picnics, children play on the playground, joggers can exercise, and fisherman can enjoy a day on one of the two beautiful lakes.

This park that was once an eyesore to the city of Virginia Beach is now their pride and joy.

When people puts their minds to it they can do almost anything and turning our trash into treasure not only helps the environment but can add beauty to our lives.

Recycling is the process of taking used products and reusing them. Most often recycling involves collecting the waste products and processing them into a new product. Recycled items include, paper, plastic, glass and metals. There are many items that can be recycled. Recycling is something that came to the fore front as means of reducing waste and helping to save the environment from the hazards of landfills.

The Start of Recycling

Recycling was first really talked about in the 1970s. However, recycling is a natural thing. Many people recycle and do not even think about it. For example, when you buy something at a garage sale, you are recycling that item. You are taking something someone else would have thrown away and putting it to use. Recycling seemed to catch on all over.

Recycling has also seen a surge in popularity as concern is growing about global warming and environmental concerns. People have been educated about the dangers of dumping trash and they want a better future for their children. Additionally, recycling products, like aluminum cans, has been made simple through the introduction of collection bins in many different public places. There are recycle bins in stores, on the street and in many other public places that encourage you to recycle your trash. Many communities also have recycling services that pick up recyclables just like trash is collected.

Increase in Popularity, Increase in Rates

There are many ways that you can recycle for free, but if you have your recyclables collected then you usually have to pay a service fee. With the increase in the number of people recycling and the increase in operating costs, the cost of recycling is going up. Funding from government sources is being cut and that also leads to an increase in recycling rates. Recycling costs are rising and those costs are being passed onto the consumer.

Another Roadblock

Not every product can be easily recycled. This is another roadblock when it comes to recycling. If a recycling center sees an increased demand for recycling a certain product, like batteries, that must be handled specially, then they may decide to start collecting that product. This could lead to higher operating costs.

If a person has to search for a place to recycle, chances are they will just throw it in their trash and forget about it. People want recycling to be hassle free.

The Future

The future of recycling depends on many factors. Some of the things that will effect recycling future include:

- education about recycling
- making recycling more available
- new technological advances
- initiatives and government regulations

There are not a lot of recycling laws on the books. Most people recycle simply because they want to. Many items recycled are those items that would spend years in a landfill. Items like plastic or aluminum can be recycled and used to make new products. This helps to cut down on the amount of raw materials that must be harvested and it keeps these products out of the landfills. Recycling has many benefits, but it is really up to each person to help keep it going strong.

Landfills have always been a staple in our society. They were the place we put the trash we did not want. They were the ugly underground of our throw-away society. Is there still a place for them, though? Are we slowly forgoing landfills in favor of recycling and simply throwing away less trash? Is there a future for landfills?

The Description of a Landfill

The facts and figures about landfills is rather shocking. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2000, each person in the U.S. was responsible for 4.5 pounds of trash per day. The land required to handle this waste equaled one acre for 10,000 people. On that one acre the trash would need to be piled eight feet high.

Landfills were originally created in the 1950s. They replaced open dumps that had been used previously. Landfills had containment systems that helped to isolate the garbage and minimalize the environmental impact and health risk. As trash breaks down, though, there is a natural process that produces, what is called, landfill gases. The gases must be diffused or otherwise extracted as they pose a health risk.

Landfill Location

Finding a spot to put a landfill is not simple. There are many restrictions and roadblocks. Landfills are a community issue, so in many cases, people within the community will put up a fight to prevent a landfill from coming to their area. An area chosen for landfills must pass screening to ensure it meets engineering and geological specifications and regulations.

If a landfill is not located within a reasonable distance to the community then trash removal costs will increase. As communities become more populated it is getting more difficult to find places to put landfills. Many communities are having to go to different states just to find a place for their landfill. The impact of this is going to be a great increase in the cost of trash removal.

The Future

The future of landfills is not as bleak as it may seem. They standards of operation and the great improvements in landfill construction have made landfills safer. Closed landfills are being recycled. The land may be turned back into a community space or even mined for valuable products.

The understanding of landfills and how they work has transformed them. There is no doubt that in the future even more will be understood about them to make them even more valuable and much safer. The key for the future is proper management, planning and guidance of landfills to ensure that they do not pose a risk and that when closed, they are put back to good use.

The amount of waste in the United States has went down. There are more opportunities for recycling, so waste gets reused instead of dumped in a landfill. However, eliminating all waste is a very unlikely event. There will always be some type of solid waste and there will always be a need to have somewhere to put it. Landfills are around for the long haul. They may change over time, but they are likely to always be around.

Trash service has always been a need, but it can came a long way since those early times when trash was just dumped wherever. We have found many ways to make trash removal healthier and better for the environment. There have been great strides in trash service that have brought to our civilized and well managed methods that we have today.

In the Beginning

There has always been trash of some kind. Though it is not documented, the early civilizations probably just dropped trash anywhere. Of course, their trash would have been biodegradable and probably just broke down and was absorbed back into the earth. It was nothing like the many man-made products we throw away today.

In Greece, in 500 B.C. there was a municipal dump where everyone would dump their trash. The Mayans also had a trash dump. In early Europe, people would simply dump trash in the gutters. Some people would burn their trash as a heat source or go through the trash of wealthy neighbors for food scraps or other items that they would reuse.

The Next Step Up

It was in the 1800s when the first actual trash service began. Horse drawn carts were used to help carry away the trash that was shoveled off the streets.

In the 1900s some small towns developed places where pigs were housed and fed the trash collected from the town. These were called piggeries. Piggeries functioned well and many places still had one as late as the 1960s. However, in the 1950s many pigs in the piggeries got sick and laws were passed that all garbage must be cooked before being fed to the pigs.

Also during the 1900s, larger cities had dumps. Most trash was brought to the dump by each individual, but some areas had collection which was done by a horse drawn cart. The trash in the dumps was usually burnt.

More Modern Times

As cities became more industrialized, there became a need to keep the streets and the water sources clean. Vehicles were built to collect trash. The first trucks were just open and trash often spilled out of them. Later on vehicles with compactors came along to make the trash service collection more sanitary.

Today there is municipal garbage collection which collects your trash right at your curbside. In some places you may use a dumpster where you put your trash into a large bin and a truck comes and collects it. Trash dumps are sanitary and many different policies help to ensure that trash is kept separate from ground water and other water sources, in addition, to being kept away from the population and posing a health threat.

In addition, recycling centers also help with trash service. Most cities offer a recycling service where you can set out your recyclables and have them picked up just like your trash.

The strict laws and standards, today, have ensuring that trash service operates like a very well oiled machine. You will not find trash being dumped in the streets and raging illnesses attributed to unsanitary trash disposal. Trash service has came a long way from the beginning.
